The rise in mail order sales often goes hand in hand with high consumption of packaging, filling and cushioning materials. While protecting goods is essential, excessive materials incur high costs and harm the environment.
To optimize this process, we developed an idea in a joint project with Clausthal University of Technology and Georg August University of Göttingen. Opitz’s expertise in technical development and its know-how in mechanical engineering and automation have resulted in the creation of a high-tech machine. An intelligent algorithm automatically calculates the exact amount of cushioning material required and positions it precisely without the need for personnel. This allows us to save resources, reduce costs and set new standards in the packaging industry—efficiently, sustainably and innovatively.
The machine is already in use in isolated cases and is undergoing a successful test phase. We are currently working on making the machine suitable for mass production.
One problem with the growth of mail order is the very high consumption of packaging, filling and cushioning materials. Goods shipped must be protected as well as possible. However, this results in immense costs for the sender and also harms the environment.
The process of inserting filling material needs to be streamlined. Based on a highly complex algorithm, we automatically place the minimum amount of padding material required in exactly the right places. This reduces consumption to a minimum. The result is a globally unique innovation.
